Elite Athletes Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Stop Execution of Boxing Champion
Over 20 Olympic medal winners, trainers and other world-class competitors have endorsed a appeal calling for a stop to the death penalty of a boxing champion and coach, who is sentenced to die in the nation.
Increasing Worldwide Condemnation
During growing global condemnation over Iran’s escalating use of executions as a tool of oppression, the strongly worded appeal condemns the government's verdict to maintain the death sentence of the boxing champion.
Vafaei Sani, thirty, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and accused of aiding an dissident organization. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and held in isolation.

Record of Killing Athletes
The appeal noted that the athlete's situation was not unique and underscored the country's past of sentencing to death athletes for their beliefs, including a football captain, captain of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the female volleyball side. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year Iranian sports titleholder, was also executed.
Other endorsers to the letter comprise Tracy Edwards, who captained the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a renowned sailing award; the ex- leader of the soccer side an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the global tournament.
Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process
The boxer was taken into custody in early 2020. The accusations against him included “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and destruction of government belongings”. His ruling has been overturned on two occasions but on October 4 it was upheld on the third occasion. His court case was condemned as “deeply biased” by human rights activists and bodies.
Appeal to UN
The appeal to prevent the athlete's capital punishment follows a previous letter to the UN high commissioner for freedoms, signed by in excess of a hundred human rights experts and entities, calling for measures to stop the competitor's capital punishment.
Execution Crisis
