The bowler's last Test match for New Zealand was versus the English side in the final month of 2024.

England bowling consultant Southee is still working through the extent of his role will be at the upcoming Ashes series in Australia.

The ex- New Zealand pace bowler is only likely to be available for the opening match due to his participation in the International League T20 competition, which begins on 2 December in the UAE.

Southee, aged 36, assumed a position as the English team's pace bowling advisor in the warmer months after claiming 391 wickets in 107 Tests for the Kiwis.

Speaking as the English squad for the opening of three Twenty20 games against the Kiwis was announced, Southee stated of his availability: "We are still evaluating that at the moment.

"We'll see what happens over the coming days."

English pace icon Broad had stated the Australia team as their "weakest squad since 2010", but Southee was in little doubt over the anticipated challenge during the series, which starts on November 21.

"I don't think there's at any time a bad Aussie side," Southee remarked.

"The team's attention is firmly on what we're trying to do. I think the quality of [the English] side that's going out to the host country is excellent.

"It ought to be an absolute cracker, that series. Not only [are|do] English and Australian people looking forward to it, I think the whole cricket world is."

However, before the English team travel to Perth for the first Ashes match, they face the Kiwis in the city of Christchurch on Saturday.
