Arsenal's manager feels assured that his side can continue to cope with player absences after confirming that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The Germany international has been out since August after undergoing knee surgery. Originally slated to be available earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when stepping up his recovery and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is far more dependable and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This development creates a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position against Chelsea, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Additional concerns involve centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a more robust situation to handle such absences.

Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge

In response if more options was benefiting their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, since the current term has been worse in some areas, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we want to compete at the top. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Speaking about the complication highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the next level and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”

He shared his eagerness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, for me, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I watch him struggle being outside.”
