What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
